Highlighting The Irish Workhouse Centre In Portumna, County Galway Ireland
The Irish Workhouse System, The Most Hated Institution In Irish History
The Great Famine, also known as the Great Hunger, and the Irish Potato Famine, was a period of mass starvation and disease in Ireland lasting from 1845 to 1852 and beyond, that constituted a historical social crisis and had a major impact on Irish society and history.
At one time there were 163 workhouses in total. The Irish Workhouse Centre is one of only a few workhouses that survived intact and serves as a workhouse museum in Portumna, on the Galway/Tipperary boarder.
